Rhetor’s Notebook Post #8

Before class on Monday, your blogging team will need to meet to generate a focus for your team blog. Based upon your shared interests, your task is to identify a topic, issue, or theme around which you can all frame your individual posts. Together, I’d like to you write a proposal for this project and post it here as a comment to our blog. In this proposal, I would like to see you: 1) clearly describe the focus of your team blog and explain how it relates to current debates or discussion on this issue (that is, begin to situate your blog in terms of its kairos), 2) provide a tentative sense of how each individual writer will address this issue and explain what his or her argument might be about it, and 3) give us a sense of the larger significance of this issue and explain how it relates to the notion of the “public good.”

  1. The focus of our blog is the recent environmental concerns within Denver as well as the state of Colorado in general. In the United States during recent years, there has been a tremendous push for “green” technology and renewable energy. Also, people are becoming less dependent on oil due to the preservation of natural resources and new methods of powering our country. Sheridan plans to address the current use of solar panels and wind farms in Denver and surrounding areas. These energy producing techniques are revolutionizing our dependency on fossil fuels. Chris plans to discuss oil drilling in other areas and how it is affecting the prices in Denver. Denver is making more of an effort than ever to be a “green” state. Xiaoting will discuss what the people of Denver can do to diminish the carbon footprints they leave. She will focus on how we can all move forward and implement these new ideas. These issues all relate to the “public good” because our natural resources are going to run out eventually and we are going to be in significant trouble. We need to respect our earth and atmosphere to preserve our beautiful surroundings.

  2. Awareness and Assistance shelters are extremely important to have in Colorado. Without these places to go, people who have suffered from things like rape, homelessness, and drug abuse have a lower chance of getting the professional help that they need. By looking at the statistics, one can see how necessary these shelters are. Denver’s 2010 reports suggest that if there are more shelters and healthcare centers, those who are affected have a better chance of receiving treatment. Also, these statistics are only based on those who reported their incidents, there are many more incidents that are not reported, and those people need professional treatment as well.

Renee will be addressing rape assistance and treatment centers in Denver. There are not many comprehensive rape centers in Denver that provide care for their clients as well as promote awareness for a low, if not lack of, cost. There should be more comprehensive centers so that victims of rape have more and easier access to assistance. Joey will be blogging about the effectiveness of drug rehabilitation centers. First off, how many are their in the Colorado area, and what are the numbers as to who is “cured” of drug addiction. Are there many who partake in drug rehab that come out still addicted? Alice is going to write about the homeless people in the society and will focus on why homeless people sleep outside instead of using the homeless shelters.

For those in these groups, they will have a place to go for help. There is a responsibility for the United States, and more specifically Colorado, to provide improved shelters and facilities. With that responsibility come the tax dollars needed to make these shelters more effective. When people receive the treatment they need, society is able to develop for the better in a more sophisticated and efficient manner.

  3. Jenn, Shelby and I plan to discuss the topic of immigration in the United States. Immigration has always been an issue in America and is a big deal currently because of the new laws passed in Arizona. Jenn plans to discuss the new law in Arizona that states law enforcement agents can stop any person who looks illegal. She is going to talk about how the legislation in Colorado is trying to pass a similar law in relation to immigrants in Colorado. Shelby will talk about education in relation to immigration including the Dream Act. She will investigate the issue of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and the rights that they deserve. I will talk about the economy and the effects, both negative and positive, that immigrants have on Colorado’s economy. Immigration affects everyone in society. It impacts who you interact with everyday and the different attitudes that people have toward immigrants.

  5. The focus of our team blog is about the environmental safety and health issues today in Colorado. Not only is the environment an issue at hand each and every day, today’s knowledge on the subject is increasing dramatically. Becoming green is a new fad in todays society. Buildings across the world are becoming “green” only facilities. Also solar panels are very popular within the upper class citizens. Saving money on energy is rising which is all helping the environment, but there are also many things that are killing the environment quickly and dramatically. Statistics will show how the ozone layer is getting killed causing global warming, production of growing food, and the extinction of animals will prove these points. Gas, smoke, and littering are some main culprits to these issues. Cailie will talk about the global warming and how it is effecting Colorado as a whole. Jeremy will talk about littering in Colorado, and how much of an effect it has on the environment and habitat. Harrison will talk about how gas and smoke from factories that is putting out carbon and its effects on the environment. The larger significance of this issue is to try and get the state of Colorado focused on all the “green” tactics that are popular today. By becoming more green, the “public good” will be able to use the oceans, lakes, parks, and outdoors to enjoy life and not be scared of destroying it. Each and every person uses the environment every day, and without keeping it healthy and safe for the public, then life itself will change dramatically.

  6. We are going to focus on recent budget cuts in Colorado and how it will eventually affect the public education system. The issue of public education is not only a big deal in Colorado but also in America as whole. Each of us will take a different level of education (elementary, high school and high education) and discuss how those will each be affected by the budget cuts. Our arguments might focus on the quality of the education and how valuable the education will be in the long run. This definitely has something to do with the “public good” because as citizens, people should be able to receive a good education and therefore be able to invigorate the community.
