Finding and evaluating extrinsic proofs: Part II

Before the end of the class, I would like you to work together in your peer review groups and for each writer, find three promising sources that could help you strengthen your appeals extrinsic proofs in your first essay. Use the search tools we discussed today in class, and aim to find three different kinds of sources. For example, you might find a news source, an article or study written by an academic expert, and information from a credible non-profit or advocacy organization. In your comment, identify each source (author, title, sponsoring organization or publication) and describe why you think it is credible.

Child Externalizing Behavior and Parents’ Stress, The Role of Social Support
    By: Lisa M. Suarez

This article not only explains that parents cause stress on their children, but that childrens behavior causes stress on parents. A child who behaves badly induces stress on the parent for how they raised them. The parent then has to decide how to deal with their child at home and at school.

Social Structure, Life Stress, and Depressive Symptoms in a High School-Age Population

By: Susan Gore, Robert H. Aseltine, Jr. and Mary Ellen Colten

This article analyzes the main roots of stress in high school students. In analyzing this, a more in depth discussion of why high school students are feeling stressed can be generated, thus allowing for a stronger argument.

  2. I found an article that was wrote by a professor in University of South Florida. The whole article talked about the “relationships among stress, coping and mental health in high-achieving high school students”. This one is useful for my first essay, because I think it can relate to my high school experience in China.

  4. Price, Katie. "A school counselor's routine." Bakersfield Californian, The (CA) 7 Feb. 2011, Editorial Page: NewsBank. Web. 7 Feb. 2011.
The article written by Katie Price seems reliable because she is speaking from personal experience and works within the public schools that she is talking about. This will definitely help my article because it will help prove my point that teachers are overwhelmed by the mass amount of students that they are responsible for. In my paper I talk about the importance of students having one on one time with teachers or a mentor of some sort and this would help support my claim that this would be helpful for students to be more successful. This article was published in a newspaper and even though it wasn’t a large newspaper I still believe it is a credible resource.

Edwards, Julia. "College burnout: When is it time to take a break?." Chicago Tribune (IL) 6 Feb. 2011, Final, Sunday: 28. NewsBank. Web. 7 Feb. 2011.
The next article was published in the Chicago Tribune so I can easily assume that the article is a good resource. She gives an unbiased opinion about why students lose motivation and the things we can do to improve the way students go about dealing with it. I would definitely use this article because she seems very knowledgeable about the topic and wants the students to be successful.

Gardner Jr., Ralph. "Poor little smart kids. (Cover story)." New York 29.11 (1996): 30. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 7 Feb. 2011.
This is from a journal which addresses, in this issue, educational stress in private schools. I found it through Academic Search Complete which gives academic sources.

School Size, School Climate, and Student Performance
    May 1996
    Kathleen Cotton
This is an analytical study researching the relationship between the size of a school and certain aspects of schooling (including personal experiences of students).

  6. Sources of stress and coping responses of high school students.
    Mates D, Allison KR.

This article is good for this topic because it has focus studies about how stress affects high school students in different ways.

This article talks about the different, effective ways of teaching. Also, it addresses how "unnatural" teaching is and how challenging it is to teach various students because there is not one specific way that works. The differing levels of education and styles, can put pressure on students who are uncomfortable with a specific method. Teaching is an art and takes time to master in order to raech every student in a productive manner.
